Tips
I have to admit, 15 minutes takes forever when you are making a speech. I can only tell you to make sure you pick a topic that you feel passionate about and can find alot of information on it. Try staying away from the "over-done" topics like abortion, death penaltyy, and all of the other topics. Practice your speech and do not underestimate yourself, after a semester you would be supprised how easily you can write your speech. Good Luck!

Besides staying away from overused topics, try and pick a topic that has a long history and has a lot of info. I did nuclear power and it isn't debated very often yet there is a lot of information. Also, pick a topic that you actually care about and want to learn more about because it makes researching and writing more interesting. Writing the speech might sound like it takes a lot of time but if you stretch it out over a couple of days it is a bit easier. When making your speech bring a bottle of water because 1. it's nice to have an excuse to pause for a while and 2. your mouth and throat get really dry. That's about it.

The most important thing, in my opinion, is to clearly state what you are arguing about. Express what you feel, and at the same time, have some facts to back you up. It's going to get boring, so try to add some humor or try to keep the audience 'awake'!

Issues and controversies on the ljcds resources sheet can be really useful if your topic is on there and it can help you pick your topic because if a topic's on there, then there must be enough info to write a speech.
